Did you know that ? The Chilean airforce´s only war operation was on September 11, 1973, as part of the coup détat that brought down the Govt. headed by Salvador Allende.
Several U.K built Hawker Hunter jet fighters were used to fire missiles against the "La Moneda" Presidential Palace in downtown Santiago.
This caused a huge blaze that forced the govt. supporters that had resisted against the infantry soldiers since early morning to surrender at approximately 3 p.m.
President Allende remained in his office and was found dead with a gunshot wound in his head.
The Commander in Chief of the Chilean Airforce, General Bachelet had been arrested previous to the attack by the Hawker Hunters, and was tortured to death some weeks later by his colleagues.
